Releasing his first mix-tape” The First Flight” in December 2009, Diggy Simmons, created a project with no assistance from family members. The mix-tape was put together and released with networking via the internet with other talented young individuals. The first single off the mix-tape is "Point to Prove", where he is expressing his struggle to prove to the world that he is his own person and he does not want to be known as Rev's son and/or Russell's nephew. Not wanting to be labeled as just "the rapping son of a rap legend", Diggy’s personalized lyrical skills on the microphone are indeed something spectacular.
Growing up as the fourth oldest child within a family where everyone has made a name for themselves without people feeling you’ll automatically “win” because of your last name. Making a name for himself, Daniel “Diggy” Simmons, is proud to be a “Simmons” but wants the masses to see him as more than just the son of, Rev Run of Run DMC, nephew of, Russell Simmons and little brother of Vanessa, Angela and Joseph (Jo-Jo) Simmons; he’s Diggy the fashion icon, shoe designer and rapper who is holding his own. The charmer of MTV’s “Runs House” and big brother of Russell, Jr. (Russy) and Miley, who grew before our eyes, has the hip hop community on the edge of their seat anticipating what many have called, “the next hottest thing!”
Aside from the much talked about shoe line, Chivalrous Culture dropping Fall 2010, Daniel has kept busy with the creation of his follow up mix-tape, Airborne. Signing to Atlantic Records in March of 2010, a day after his 15th birthday, followed by inking a management deal with Chris Lightly and Violator Management, the building of #TeamDiggy has been executed. Becoming a developed artist with each track released before being signed, it took him going into the studio the night Drake releasing his first single, “Over” and Diggy hopping on it to create, “Just the Beginning” that caught the attention of mass media outlets and others who would soon become fans. Enjoying the moment of being titled “the first Artist” to release material over the highly anticipated single of Drake, the younger Simmons teamed up with video director Phil The God to create the viral footage of what many are saying “got him his deal”; Flow Stoopid, a remake track over Nas’ “Made You Look”. Months of being cosigned by some of the greatest in the industry from Lupe Fiasco, Kanye West, Common, Swizz Beats, Talib Kweli, Ashton Kutcher, MC Hammer, Quest Love, Tyrese and many others via twitter and their personal blogs, Diggy’s “Made You Look” remix solidified his spot in the hip-hop world.
Performing at New York City’s Hot 97’s Summer Jam introduced Diggy to many more soon to be fans, followed by him being named one of MTV’s Top 5 Breakthrough Artists of 2010. With all eyes on him and people wondering if Diggy were just all hype, he called on Sony Music artist, Bei Maejor to hop on his first single off of “Airborne”, “Great Expectations” which later landed him and the track in an AT&T “Big Shoes” Commercial. While people were buzzing about the commercial, he teamed up with his mentors, Lupe and Pharrell Williams, having them hop on the skate-boarders labeled track” Oh Yeah”, prior to the release of “Thinkin Bout You” and “Little Monster”. Battling with constant delay’s, the release of “Airborne” was a success, deeming his goal to make music and creating his own name accomplished. The mix-tape features Raekwon, Chris Brown, Colin Monroe, Wynter Gordon, Bei Maejor, Pharrell Williams, Lupe Fiasco and many more, with production by Boi-1-da and Black the Beast, hosted by DJ Spin King.
Having previously being featured in the New York Daily News, MTV News with Sway Calloway, and BET’s 106 and Park prior to the release of “Airborne”, making rounds for a second visit seems likely. He appeared in XXL’s May 2010 issue and a host of online and print publications, including, RealTalkNY.com, Hustlegrl.com, RapRadar.com, Rollingout.com 2dopeboyz.com, BET.com’s Sound Off, VIBE.com, Honey Magazine (HoneyTV), Karencivil.com, Right On! Magazine, YRB Magazine, Get Money Magazine, Complex.com, Necolebitchie.com, YouHeardThatNew.com and more, including guest speaking at Pharrell Williams, KIDULT program.
Participating in BET’s Hip-Hop Awards Cipher along with his Father and Brother, JoJo Simmons, as they battle Ice Cube and his two sons, Daniel has come a long way in a short time. While you can’t deny his name plays a role of influence, it certainly does not mean he hasn’t worked hard to get where he is thus far. The fans know the skills and hard work he has dedicated to each project and aside from himself, the music is made just for them, the fans! Diggy is a great role model who is focused, beyond his rap career and fashion line, which the youth should be and can be inspired by him as previous generations were inspired by his Father and Uncle.
