Uncle Murda, born Leonard Grant, is a gangsta rapper hailing from the City Line section of East New York. In 2007 Murda became somewhat of a local sensation by linking up with DJ Green Lantern and Cut Master C, and releasing hit underground singles “Bullet Bullet” and “Run The City.” After his mixtapes fell into the hands of Jay-Z, Roc-A-Fella Records signed the budding rapper, and quickly featured him on the Fabolous and Jay-Z collaboration “Brooklyn” off the album From Nothin’ to Somethin.’
Murda had a tumultuous 2008, including a life-threatening gunshot to the head and a souring of his relationship with Def Jam after the departure of Hov. The Brooklyn-born thug was not about to let what he considered minor bumps in the road to knock him off course, though. He discharged himself from the hospital less than 24 hours after he was admitted with the bullet still lodged in his skull. Staying true to his lyrical content, Murda refused to cooperate with investigators and treated his pain with “Hennessey and Newports.” He responded to Def Jam’s blunder by releasing a slew of street bangers independently. Recently, he has appeared on tracks with Busta Rhymes and the Don Cannon Vitamin Water-sponsored The Choice is Yours mixtape alongside Jadakiss, Nipsey Hussle and others.
